Hi Lauren. My friend Kris Allen was telling me what a great bari player you are and how we should have you up to Hartford some day to play with our new 10tet. I hope we can make that happen at some point. I'll write when something comes up.
Please say hi to Mike for me. We played together a few years back with Dave Santoro.
All the best,
Earl

Hello Lauren, i'm a bariton saxophoniste in Spain, sorry for my English.
You're a very good sound, and i like know what mouthpiece and reeds do you play.
I play a meyer 9 hardrubber mouthpiece and a gonzalez n2 reeds., is a good mouthpiece for you?
Ah! my bariton sax is a selmer mark VI whith low A.
Best regards!

Dear Lauren,

This is your old friend and neighbor, Darren Server, sending you best wishes and a hug on your special day. I hope you're well and having a fabulous day.

Thank you so much for always keeping me up to date as to where you are performing. As you may remember, I am always traveling around the country doing theatre and haven't been able to make it to your performances. But, I look forward to the day when I can see you performance again.

Do you still stay in touch with Eddie Harlow and Toni Ballard? If you do, give them my best. Also, give my best to Michael.

Wishing you all the best of health, happiness and love.

Love and aloha, Darren.

P.S. I'm not sure if this is your current email address, so I'll check and see if you are on facebook.

I'm listening to "Blueprint" so much that I'm craving a new album from you. The quartet with acoustic piano and bass is perfect. I have many tenor sax albums with this kind of sound and feel but yours is the only bari sax album I have. The compostions are wonderful. Please release a new recording soon.

Thanks

Lauren...very nice playin', youve got the Pepper Adams spirit for sure.
I discovered you on the internet...AccuJazz. We listen all day long in my shop.
Every once in a while i hear something and have to get up from my bench and check it out. I was pretty sure i was going to see Pepper Adams. Anyway keep up the great playing!
One last thing..Is that a RPC mouthpiece you play on? Take Care

You are SUPER inspiring! I play the Bari. And i'm in my small school's jazz combo, and listening to play your solos pushes me to do better with mine. And to generally be the best musician i can be. And so for my Jazz HIstory modern musician report. I chose you. :)

04.19.10 | Marc Myers
Dear Lauren,

Great seeing you this evening with the Mingus Big Band. I was there with Sue. Be sure to take a look at www.JazzWax.com. It's now the No. 1 ranked daily jazz column wordlwide. I think you'll get a kick out of the jazz legend interviews.

You are an amazing player with enormous chops and fluid ideas. Then again, the entire band is out of sight.

Best,

Marc

Hi. I am a thirteen year old baritone saxophonist, and im a girl. Knowing of even you exsist makes me want to cry because i play piano too! i love the bari-- i just didnt know that a girl could actuly make it this far!! you are my inspiration. Thank you so much. i can only hope to be like you as i get older. you are amazing. AMAZING!

03.18.10 | Walter Maas
Dear Lauren,
Are you going to perform in Europe at some point? Or is the Mingus Big Band coming to Europe in the near future?

Meanwhile I have been testing the Buffet 400 baritone (clear laquer) and comparing with my Selmer SA80. I think the Buffet was sounding a little "thichker" than my Selmer and ergo's where quite good.
I believe you are an endorser for Buffet? How would you rate the Buffet 400 baritone, can it be considered at the same level quality and soundwise as the other big brands Selmer, Yanagisawa, Keilwerth?

i have ordered your album Blueprint you play awesome....

Thanks and best regards,
Walter Maas

Hey Lauren, saw you on the cover of Sax journal... I'm great friends with Nathan Nabb!! He's obviously also on the cover... just wanted to say your playing is great, enjoying your cd!!

Dear Lauren
I have listened to tracks on the Internet of your album Bleuprint. I love your music and your sound.
I play bari myself and have been trying tho purchase your cd in The Netherlands but I cannot find it. Id rather not use my credit card on the Internet to buy your cd. Do you know of any other options?
I was wondering if you are using your MK VI or the Buffet 400 on this cd. I have been looking at this new 400 series from Buffet. I am now playing a Selmer II bari but not quite please of the sound I can create i.e. not dark enough. Tried many mouthpiece / reed combo's. How would you compare the 400 against the Selmer II sound wise and quality (mechanical) wise and the ergo's? They (the Buffets) are hard to find where I live.
Thanks and lots of succes in your career!

Lauren,

I've been singing for my band Leviathan for years, (a post-punk/hard rock kind of thing), but I've always loved old delta blues, and both cool jazz, bebop, and hard bop, so now that I'm getting older, I decided to learn how to play bari sax while reading as much as I can about the instrument, and the music it has spawned over the years.

Unfortunately, finding a bari sax instructor has been daunting, even in NYC. I was hoping that you may be willing to give lessons, or perhaps you know someone you could reccomend? I work full time and attend law classes on the side, but I'm free on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays to take lessons if that fits into your schedule.

I'd be able to practice in the Bronx, in Manhattan, or at a new studio I'm helping to do the marketing for in Mount Vernon. Please let me know!

Many thanks,

congrats on all the success. you're a wonderful person as well as an incredible musician.

p.s. be careful. i haven't seen ricky bugle in way too long, but the past few times i did see him he just mumbles about mike dirubbo and gets an erection. i'm pretty sure ricky has a crush on him.

Lauren~
I am Kira deCoudres and I have been recently looking into other (women in particular!) bari sax players. I am 14 and I have played sax for about 5 years (bari for 4) and piano for 10. I love the bari for it's sound and overall relaxed and unique style that everyone is always looking for! Your website/bio really stood out because of your success (Wow!) and your philosophy on approaching music and goals. As a bari player, what advice would you give someone who wants to pursue music as a career and stick with the bari? I have been told a lot that if I want to go into music professionally then I should switch back to alto.... but the bari is what I am really intrested in.
Thank you!
~Kira deCoudres
P.S. I live in NY too

Hi how are you? I wanted to ask about Buffet Saxophones I play with the band Thievery Corporation and they are bringing one for me to try on one of our shows? What do you think about them and how do they compare say to some of the other horns I have played that are made in Tawian? I have played the Barone saxes, The ones Roberto has designed and the PMauriat? Any info would be appreciated I love your p[laying and congrates on the endorsement.

Hey Lauren,

I'm a huge fan of your music. I was supposed to come and see you rip it this past Monday night with the Mingus Big Band, my favorite band, the band I dream of playing in one day soon. I missed the show, but I feel that I should come and see your LSQ at your next gig...I'm just hoping that I see you rockin' with the Mingus Big Band soon! I've always wanted to see you tear through "Moanin'"! Best Wishes, and I'll see you soon, and hopefully next month or something you can fit another Mingus show in your schedule...Thank you. Your inspiration is well appreciated.

03.01.09 | Rich Chapel
Hi Lauren

Just received Blueprint and gave it a listen. First of all, you handle the big sax like an alto! You really get around that horn. That being said, I think ballads bring out your best lines. I like to hear melodic lines in a solo as opposed to patterns, scales or licks. "For Mr. Stubbs" is my favorite track, followed by "Intrepid Traveler" and "True." I'm sure I'll hear a lot more with a few more spins, but I like your CD and I know I'll be going back to it frequently. By the way, I really like the album title, "Blueprint." After reading you bio and taking in the myriad groups you've played in, "Blueprint" is the perfect title for your first CD as a leader. It says you have a plan and expresses confidence in achieving your goals. Considering you are "fighting it out" on the NYC jazz scene, I'd say your plan is sound, no pun intended!

You should get in touch with Tyra Penn at WICN Public Radio. I'm certain she will get you spins and have you on her Jazz New England show. You can reach her at
tyra@wicn.org.

I'm working at an ad agency as a copywriter. That's been my trade for most of my working years. I'm 61 and, hopefully, I can ride this gig into the sunset.

Keep up the great work. You have the best sound on bari sax! I used to play b.s. at Berklee and in the Army Band, so I know how unwieldy it can be. I never could make it purr like you do!

Best regards,

RC

Lauren,
Great site and you sound great. I play baritone almost all the time anymore. I have a 12 pc RnB funk band (six horns) and a sax quintet. I am very busy in the NY-NJ metro area. If you are interested in subbing for me when you are available let me know. I would not call you unless the gig was $300 plus and within decent traveling distance, I am not doing the type of big band work you are on but I do work shows with recording artists and trade show gigs.
Thanks!

I love your music. I haven’t seen too many female bari players and none that can play as well as you. I'm a high school teacher and play in Swing band in Florida. I was just searching the internet during class and found your site. I just bought a bari to play in the band. It’s a copy of a 1930's Conn made in Italy. It sounds great but it has a lot of bare brass. I will check out more of your site when I am at home.

Lauren! I can't believe how much you have done! I was hoping to see you at the reunion, but Jessica said you were performing. When did you switch to the barisax?

I was out of the country for quite a bit and now that I'm back it's fun to see what everyone is up to. Will this site send me e-mails as to when you are performing? I knew you would be better than you were in high school, but listening to the recordings on this site, wow!

I re-united with the ward meville crowd that we used to hang with. I saw them yesterday and they asked me what you were doing and I realized I had no idea, so I googled you.

Jessica told me you are married too. Congratulations.

Hope to see you soon,

Francie

My name is Melissa i'm 16, I just started playing the baritone this year for jazz band at my high school.it was very interesting. So i went around on the internet looking for bari sax players that are girls, cause i'm a girl and my teacher said that he didn't think that there was any Bari sax playes that are girls. So i went on the internet to look for bari sax players that were girls. I came across yours and a few others. I thought you were very talented and a great bari sax player. The bari is very awsome, and i'm glade that i found some on as talented as you who plays the Baritone sax just like me. I admit it is pretty hard however its a great insterment.

Hi Lauren;
I was blown away with the wonderful sound and expressionism you give to jazz music. Keep up the great work. Could you let me know when you produce a new cd on the market. I would like to get you on the air on WHRO Sennett in Session so people can hear more of you. I like a bari sax playing in small combo work because it brings out the inter most sounds of the horn.

What a sound! Your high quality sound comes through on every piece, no matter what note you play (pitch) or sound volume (dynamics). And I know that takes a lot of hard work and practice. First class all the way, and your sidemen also are great.

Hi my name is Liz Colschen I'm a freshman at Baldwin Wallace Conseravtory of Music although I'm from Ledyard Connecticut. I just wanted to say I really admire you're playing. I have recently started listening to your playing and it has really inspired me. I was just wondering from one bari sax player to another if you had any advice on improving? I play bari in BW's jazz band, but I have never improved before, and I was wondering if you had any advice on how to get started? Hope to hear from you! Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,
